From the Bay to the Milky Way, it’s going to be a full day. Check out our new exhibit RACE: Are We So Different? and enjoy hands-on science throughout the museum, including our outdoor science park Forces That Shape the Bay.
Come check out our NanoDays event. NanoDays is a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering and its potential impact on the future. NanoDays celebrations will combine simple hands-on activities for young people with events exploring current research for adults. Don’t miss our giant balloon model of a carbon nanotube and science demonstrations with UC Berkeley researchers all day.
The new planetarium will be an open exhibit from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. Visitors are welcome to drop in for presentations on constellations, deep-sky objects, and flights through the universe, as well as to get answers to their questions! Plus they will receive a 10% discount in the Discovery Corner Store on all items beginning with “B” for Berkeley. Get an astronaut’s-eye view of Earth’s surface as it changes minute to minute, by the hour, through the seasons, and over the years. You won’t need a spacecraft, just a ringside seat to Science On a Sphere® (SOS). Live SOS demonstrations will take place on the hour, every hour between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

It’s a simple truth: People are different. Throughout history, these differences have been a source of community strength and personal identity. They have also been the basis for discrimination and oppression. This exhibit provides an opportunity to understand race from a biological, cultural, and historical perspective through engaging, hands-on science experiences; real artifacts; and videos that present people’s unique stories.
Explore key issues that relate to race including:
•Skin color does not equal race.
Use a microscope to view your skin close up. Scan it and watch as your image appears on screen with skin images from dozens of other people.
•Voices do not identify race.
Use a large touch-screen monitor to try to match a voice you hear to a photo you see.
•We all have common ancestors.
Use a wheel to control an animated interactive map of how humans spread out from Africa to populate the world.
Post-Exhibit Discussion Groups
Community and school groups grades 4–12, as well as adult groups, are encouraged to sign up for a private, post-exhibit discussion. Facilitated by specially trained students and staff leaders from the UC Berkeley community, the discussion will allow your group to explore the content and concepts in this provocative exhibit in a safe, carefully facilitated environment. Discussion Cost: Group Admission plus $2 per person. By reservation only; call 510-642-5134 at least three weeks in advance of your planned visit.
Race: Are We So Different? was developed by the American Anthropological Association in collaboration with the Science Museum of Minnesota, and is presented nationally by the Best Buy Children’s Foundation.
Come explore the many hands-on science exhibits at Lawrence Hall of Science!
Get up close and personal in the nanoZone, get an astronaut's-eye-view of the Earth in Science On a Sphere, and build towering structures with Kapla blocks. Enjoy the view while learning about earthquakes, erosion, wind, and weather in Forces that Shape the Bay, our outdoor science park. Visitors in Kindergarten and younger can visit KidsLab, their very own multi sensory play area. And that's not all - come to the Hall to experience science firsthand!
Institute Activities will:
- Deepen adult level science content knowledge based on the CA Life Science Standards
- Provide outdoor experiences and trainings in partnership with EE Organizations
- Model effective inquiry-based science pedagogy
- Explore the new FOSS “Taking Science Outdoors” curricular lessons for grades K – 5
- Model the use of science notebooks in all activities
Teacher of grades 3-7 are invited to join us this summer for an eight-day Institute held at Park Day School in Oakland on fractions and decimals. We will address the teaching strategies to support students' understanding of rational numbers and include a particular focus on reaching English learners (ELs). The institute will continue with two Saturday meetings during the academic year
Explore the skies in our interactive planetarium, where questions and activities are part of the program!
Flying High: Take an imaginary trip into space. Start the excursion by speeding through a whole day in our planetarium "time machine" and then identifying the Big Dipper. Take off with the launch of a spaceship and learn how things move in space, how astronauts eat food in a weightless environment, and how satellites are put into orbit. Don’t worry, you’ll return safe and sound!
Recommended for ages 4–8.
Programs are approximately 40 minutes, and are presented live with activities. Questions are encouraged!
Please note the age restrictions for each program. Children under 6 will not be admitted, except for programs listed for ages 4-8.
