Job Description:

Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) is a program at Lawrence Hall of Science that publishes a complete line of over 70 GEMS Teacher's Guides (stand-alone, supplementary science and math curriculum), Handbooks and GEMS Kits (available through our partnership with Carolina Biological Supply Company). For the home, we offer a series of home activity kits. We are in the process of a major expansion of the product line adding a series of Curriculum Sequences; a new NSF funded product line called Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading; a series of products targeted at the after-school market; and, at the same time continuing development and revision of GEMS guides. We have a number of teacher guides averaging 400+ pages finishing field trials over the next year for the Seeds/Roots program. All will need to be revised and copy edited before publication. The Assistant Editor position will be responsible for responsible for copyediting all documents for grammar, spelling, consistency, page references and the like. There are additional materials in development for other product lines where we will also require someone with this skill.

Requirements & Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent training/work experience in development administration, membership operations, media relations, advertising, marketing, or public relations

- Experience with event planning, calendaring, meeting arrangements, and direct public contact

- Knowledge of administrative systems and operations including: budgeting, financial analysis and reporting, human resources and customer service

- Power user level knowledge of common software programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint

- Verbal and written communication skills; fluid conversational writing style to communicate persuasively with the public, LHS constituents and the media (writing samples required if selected for interview)

-Excellent oral communication skills in person and on the phone

- Strong analytical/problem-solving and organizational skills desired

- Strong service orientation

- Ability to multi-task essential

- Valid California Driver’s License and clear driving record

- Must be available to work at occasional evening and/or weekend events and available to travel (locally) to support off site events

Responsibilities:

Copy-edit and revise work to assure that text is free of errors, consistent in tone and voice, and meets design, editorial, and safety goals.

Make changes as needed to style guides and other materials used by staff in developing and editing of products.

Attend meetings and communicate with authors and designers on corrections and related issues to assure product quality.
Requirements & Qualifications:

Knowledge of computers and specifically programs relating to desktop publishing and editorial, i.e. Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, Adobe InCopy, and Adobe Acrobat. Knowledge of editorial processes, style guides, and ability to clearly track changes and document versions. Excellent copyediting skills (grammar, spelling, usage) and working knowledge of conventions used in Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition.

Excellent copyediting skills. Attention to detail and multitasking skills required. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat. Excellent writing and grammar skills. Strong knowledge of editorial processes and style guide usage, format, implementation, and revision.
Abilities (natural talents or acquired dexterity; potential to perform tasks or functions, e.g., ability to communicate verbally or in writing)

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Attention to detail. Ability to focus on computer work for extensive periods. Fast learner.

Salary Range:

Monthly: $ 28,69.00 - $30,62.00
