Community Education Specialist

The Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley’s public science center has an opening for a Community Outreach Educator, to work with learners of all ages (but primarily elementary-aged kids). In addition to facilitating learning, this position also cares for the accessibility and safety of the learning spaces.

Responsibilities

The Lawrence Hall of Science is University of California, Berkeley’s public science center, serving more than 170,000 visitors on site each year. Individually and as part of a team, this position involves leading science center efforts to engage communities, where they are, in meaningful, relevant and accessible hands-on STEM learning opportunities. This position involves planning, implementing, and presenting educational programs (Science Shows, Festivals and workshops) that enhance the public’s and diverse school and homeschool group’s understanding of STEM disciplines, as well as support teachers’ understanding of effective science pedagogy. This position also coordinates outreach volunteers and/or docents.

  • Under direct supervision, prepares and delivers standardized community education lessons and activities and/or manages a volunteer education program. 
  • Researches participant data to enhance program delivery and outcomes. 
  • Tracks and maintains required program-related paperwork, inventory, activity reports, and other documentation. 
  • Participates in approved training and developmental activities to learn and maintain programmatic and subject matter competence. 
  • Provide work direction to program volunteers.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience facilitating and developing museum virtual and in-person programs in science, technology, engineering, and/or math. 
  • Working knowledge of museum educational techniques, including knowledge of best practices for engaging learners in a variety of facilitated experiences. 
  • Content knowledge in science, engineering, technology, math, and/or education pedagogy. 
  • Intimate working knowledge of LHS programs, Hall educational program content and objectives, including school programs, youth pathways and extended duration programs.  
  • Possess the ability to quickly establish rapport with diverse communities, learners of varying ages and stages, backgrounds, and family units to create an inclusive learning environment. 
  • Possess excellent customer service skills, both to internal and external clients.
  • Possess effective verbal presentation, public speaking and facilitation skills, especially to large groups of mixed-age learners. 
  • Possess effective reading, written communications, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess skills in basic equipment repair, e.g., soldering, carpentry, electronic troubleshooting and repair. 
  • Intermediate computer and basic video production skills (for example, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, iMovie). 
  • Physical ability to pick up and carry crates (up to 50 pounds) and load/unload and move heavy carts.  
  • Physical ability to drive large cargo vans for distances of up to 4 hours (including overnight stays in long-distance outreach destinations) when needed. 
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends when needed.

Education / Training / Licenses

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Continuing education in related field.
  • CA Drivers License.
