Materials Preparation Assistant Manager

This posting is for the position of assistant manager of the Lawrence’s “Prep Hub,” which is the team responsible for procuring, preparing, storing, organizing, and distributing materials and equipment for the Lawrence’s many educational programs for children. Hours: Full-time (40 hrs / week)

Responsibilities

  • Prepares, sets-up, and cleans-up materials, supplies, and equipment for a variety of educational science programs for children, according to instructions from educational staff and Materials Preparation Manager.
  • Assists Materials Preparation Manager with all aspects of running the Lawrence Hall’s “Prep Hub” (materials preparation and storage areas, and the team who works there).
  • Maintains general organization and cleanliness of Prep Hub areas, including tasks such as doing laundry, washing dishes, and cleaning work areas.
  • Assists with monitoring inventory of supplies.
  • Runs errands such as buying groceries, buying other supplies in-person, and picking up items such as dry ice and liquid nitrogen from the UC Berkeley campus.
  • Provides excellent customer service to educational staff and other employees who submit materials requests to the Prep Hub. Works with educational staff to identify materials needs and ensure they are met.
  • Assists with mentoring and coaching UC Berkeley student employees of the Prep Hub.
  • Applies basic organizational and problem-solving skills, and works collaboratively with other Prep Hub staff, to help ensure the Prep Hub functions smoothly.
  • Occasionally (for days or weeks at a time) manages the Prep Hub independently when Materials Preparation Manager is unavailable.

Required Qualifications

  • Careful attention to detail, and ability to carry out complex instructions quickly and accurately.
  • Organizational skills and inventory management skills.
  • Time management, and ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
  • Skills in verbal and written communication in the English language, including active listening, collaboration, asking clarifying questions, offering ideas, giving clear instructions, and giving and receiving constructive feedback.
  • Experience and skills in managing, coaching, and/or mentoring, and the ability to foster and maintain a welcoming work environment.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Intermediate computer applications skills, including familiarity with Word, PowerPoint, Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Sheets.
  • Skills and experience in providing excellent customer service.
  • Experience managing and preparing supplies for educational programs, particularly informal science programs.
  • Experience with and knowledge of and/or ability to learn the Lawrence Hall of Science’s educational programs.
  • College level science coursework, or equivalent science knowledge.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry heavy boxes (up to 50lb).

Driving Required

  • A valid driver’s license and DMV check for driving record is required.
