A: I lead statewide, regional, and local efforts to build capacity, disrupt inequities, and drive sustainable change in K-12 systems, fostering inclusive science learning environments. My Center partners with leaders, teachers, and school districts through networks and the development of instructional materials (aka K-12 science curriculum).
A: Forces That Shape the Bay, especially the watershed area. I love how it brings the dynamics of water systems to life and connects visitors of all ages with science flowing right beneath our feet.
A: I’m not sure I can say I have a “path,” as it looks more like a lattice. My mom was a high school biology, AP Biology and science-electives teacher and she instilled in me a curiosity about the natural world. My grandpa was a mostly successful tinkerer, fixing items around our house and working on cars, and I was often his helper. In college, I thought I was on the pre-med track but I struggled in my first chemistry course—an experience that shook my identities as both a “good student” and “pre-med student.” By my senior year, I decided to take the GRE and apply to the University of Texas at Austin’s College of Education. I earned my Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Science Education, focusing on the intersection of student identities related to science, gender, and race & ethnicity.
A: The people who work at The Lawrence are amazing, intelligent, and ever-curious, so I’m always learning something new, regardless of the field or topic. For example, when my kids were little and my older son was fascinated by marine life, a colleague suggested actually buying a whole fish at the grocery store to explore at home. Brilliant!
A: I love working with high school and undergraduate students. They have this energy that feels palpable yet can go untapped in so many schooling settings or K-16 learning experiences. They also deserve multiple chances to discover and realize their potential—something adults can sometimes forget.
A: I’d highlight our work in computational thinking and AI. We’re developing and rolling out programs to build AI literacy and competency for students and teachers at all levels—from local classrooms to national networks. Stay tuned as they continue to roll out across The Lawrence!
