As 2025 comes to a close, we’re taking a moment to look back on the discoveries, ideas, and experiences that shaped this year at The Lawrence. From thought-provoking exhibitions and immersive storytelling to community partnerships and research-driven programs, 2025 offered countless ways to engage with science in meaningful and memorable ways. Below, we’ve rounded up some of the stories that resonated most with our community this year. We invite you to explore these highlights and reflect on a year filled with curiosity, connection, and discovery!
The Lawrence announced the upcoming opening of Future of Food, the first exhibition in its new Global Issues Exhibitions series. Through interactive experiences and real-world stories, the exhibit explores how science, culture, and innovation shape what we eat — and how our food choices impact our health, communities, and planet. Future of Food invites visitors to dig into big questions about sustainability, access, and the future of our food systems.
An immersive planetarium experience took audiences on a journey inside the human body. Bloodstream Submarine shrunk visitors down to microscopic size to explore how red blood cells function and how gene-editing technology like CRISPR is being used to treat sickle cell disease. Centered on a real patient’s story, the program makes complex biotechnology accessible for learners of all ages.
Adult visitors were welcomed to The Lawrence for its first adults-only evening in years with The Future of Food and the Buzz of Science, a lively after-hours event exploring pollinator science, Indigenous storytelling, and interactive art. Guests engaged with hands-on science experiences, heard from UC Berkeley researchers and Ohlone storytellers, and gathered around large-scale fire art as the museum transformed for a night of curiosity and connection.
Findings from Working Towards Racial Equity (WTRE), a multi-year collaborative project, highlighted strategies for building more inclusive and equitable workplaces in outdoor and environmental science education. Drawing on partnerships with 20 organizations nationwide, the published reports affirm the impact of sustained professional learning and organizational change efforts in advancing racial equity across the field.
The Lawrence announced the upcoming opening of the ‘ammatka Cafe, a new on-site dining space led by Cafe Ohlone co-founders and ’ottoy Initiative leaders Vincent Medina and Louis Trevino. Serving family-friendly fare inspired by traditional Ohlone ingredients and flavors, the cafe reflects The Lawrence’s growing partnership with the East Bay Ohlone community and its ongoing commitment to integrating Indigenous knowledge and culture across the science center. ‘ammatka opens in January!
