Arsenic Ingestion and Children

Are young children at risk of ingesting not only lead but also arsenic while playing outside? Join us in our original research project to explore this important question. In our Children and Lead Exposure program, we uncovered alarmingly high arsenic levels in residential soils. Now, we’re investigating the source: is the arsenic naturally occurring and derived from regional bedrock, or has it been introduced by human activities?

About the Program

As in all our programs, Rigorous Science + Advocacy = Environmental Justice. We approach this work through the lens of environmental justice and equity, comparing affluent and historically under-resourced communities to understand the broader impact.

In this course, you will:

  • Review scientific literature to contextualize our research,
  • Collect and analyze samples using state-of-the-art scientific equipment,
  • Study techniques used by social changemakers,
  • Examine US Geological Society Bedrock Maps,
  • Visualize data through graphing your analytical results,
  • Synthesize your findings in an abbreviated scientific manuscript.
