Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Pedagogy within a Two-week Summer Solar Program: Design and Youth Outcomes This presentation will draw on a National Science Foundation-funded study, led by a group of program designers and researchers, to design, implement, and study two models of a solar-based two-week summer program through a lens of culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy (CRSP; Ladson-Billings, 1995; Paris, 2012). This session aims to engage the ASTC community in conversations and critical reflection about how informal science educators can enact CRSP within the boundaries of their programming. Specifically, this presentation will aim to achieve the following objectives: (1) review the key tenets of culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy, (2) describe how these tenets were enacted in the context of our two-week summer programs, and (3) discuss the affordances, challenges, and points of tension within enacting CRSP in informal science contexts. Further, we will share our methods and findings in studying the impact of our program on cognitive (e.g., knowledge of solar) and socio-emotional outcomes (e.g., engagement, perceptions of self).
