Día de los Muertos Festival

10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. (all day!) – Join the Lawrence Hall of Science for Optical Illusions: See how our complex human brains can be fooled with just a few sheets of paper and movement! In this activity, participants design, build, and test an optical illusion of their own using skulls and pumpkin paper cutouts. Put your creativity and brain to the test! 10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. – Meet the scientists, Monica Arniella, PhD student in the Center for Computational Biology (CCB) in the Nielsen Lab, and Nikki Lemus, an integrative biology student in the Tarvin Lab. ¡Hablan Espanol! 12:15–2:45 p.m. – Meet the members of the Whitney Perception Lab: How does your brain process visual information like light, color, and depth? How do illusions work? Join us for fun and exciting demonstrations and activities that will trick your brain and help you explore the fascinating world of perception! ¡Hablan Espanol! 2:30–5:00 p.m. – Learn about "The Astronomy Behind Dia de los Muertos" with Dr. Bryan J. Mendez, an Astronomer at Lawrence Hall of Science and the Space Sciences Laboratory: “Astronomía de los Muertos” Dia de los Muertos occurs during a changing of the seasons, when the Sun passes through the Maya underworld, Xi’bal’ba’. Join UC Berkeley Astronomer, Bryan Mendez, for an activity to explore the movements of the Sun and the November holidays that celebrate them.
