Nature and science journaling is a powerful practice that supports observation, thinking, and learning. We will consider how journaling facilitates direct engagement, provides a venue for learner reflection, and can get learners excited about the process of observation and learning. Integrating journaling into science programs can also reinforce equitable and inclusive learner-centered teaching practices.

This session focuses on integrating journaling into lessons and programs to support learner engagement and specific learning goals in your programs. Participants will engage in a range of model journaling activities, discuss how to choose journaling activities that support their learning goals for students, discuss strategies for supporting learner engagement and practice giving feedback on journal pages.

This session is adapted from the BEETLES session, Field Journaling with Students, and builds on the virtual session, Foundations of Nature & Science Journaling.

Participation in Foundations of Nature & Science Journaling is not required to attend this session, though we do recommend completing a brief pre-reading.
