Ocean Literacy has taken off nationally and internationally as a key component in the UN’s Ocean Decade. Learn more about what ocean literacy is and how to use the Ocean Literacy Framework to integrate fundamental ocean concepts into your educational settings for all learners while also addressing NGSS standards.

Catherine Halversen is co-chair of National Marine Educators Association‘s Ocean Literacy committee; co-author of two books including, A Handbook for Increasing Ocean Literacy and Reflecting on Practice for STEM Educators. Now Emerita, while at the Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley, she designed and led a wide-range of professional learning opportunities and developed instructional materials for numerous marine science education projects (examples: MARE—Marine Activities Resources and Education,  Ocean Sciences Curriculum Sequence for Grades 6–8, and Ocean Sciences Sequence for Grades 3–5). At UC Berkeley she also co-taught two courses for Cal science majors, Communicating Ocean Sciences and Communicating Climate Science.

Sarah Pedemonte is a dedicated educator and marine biologist on a mission to make science education more inclusive and relevant. As the Formal Science Educator Lead at the Lawrence Hall of Science and Director of the Bay Area Science Project, she partners with teachers, schools, and districts to build high-quality science learning programs.
Sarah has nearly 30 years of teaching experience across public schools, universities, and informal learning spaces. She has brought ocean sciences into classrooms nationally and internationally and specializes in designing climate and ocean sciences instructional materials that can resonate with all learners.
