Shop Superintendent

The Shop Superintendent for The Lawrence oversees the daily duties and safety measures for the Production Studio staff, and leads this group to maintain all of the exhibits in the building.    

Responsibilities

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced engineering professional in a specialized engineering phase of a significant training and research effort. Assignments typically require concentration in a field of application where subject matter knowledge relevant to research objectives and methodology is of great value in understanding and establishing engineering design criteria. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Design, evaluation, construction, and operations of custom exhibits and educational interactive exhibits, devices, and materials. Serves as Production Studio Superintendent.

Uses professional engineering concepts to perform moderately complex engineering assignments. Works in a specialized engineering field on a major training and/or research effort. Works on assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.

  • Provides a full range of professional engineering services to interactive exhibits, projects, and programs; meets with program, director, and science center staff in the design and development phase.
  • Determines project specifications and parameters. Gather and analyze data; prepare formal engineering reports, drawings, and status reports. Does project estimation, timeline and development, and tracking. Provides feasibility assessments and develops project cost estimates. Analyzes and articulates particular designs and solutions’ tradeoffs (budget, timeline, implementation).
  • Performs design, construction, assembly and testing of complex interactive exhibits, equipment ,and instrument systems. Interprets complex scientific concepts into creative interactive exhibits to effectively translate content to the general public audience.
  • Provides engineering information and advice to Principal Investigators, program directors, and/or other LHS educators with administrative responsibility for the educational programs, research programs, and public science center.
  • Responsible for ensuring Production Studio facility operates safely, meeting University, OSHA and all other agency requirements, and that staff are properly trained.
  • Manages and supervises Production Studio staff.
  • Professional Development/Other Duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge associated with independently performing the full range of engineering professional design work. 
  • Thorough knowledge is necessary to apply principles, practices, and procedures in completing assignments. 
  • Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards. 
  • Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations 
  • Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions. 
  • Ability to lead and influence others.

Education & Training

Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
