Summer Camp Educator

About the Position

Are you passionate about science education? Do you have experience teaching STEAM? The Lawrence Elementary Camps team is seeking educators that are enthusiastic about teaching elementary-aged campers, mentoring high school interns, and building a community of educators with a passion for science education. Summer Camp Educators contribute to the mission of The Lawrence by facilitating STEM programs for elementary-aged kids entering grades 1–6.

Employment Type: Full time, 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM

Pay: $24.76 – $28.00 per hour

Time Period: May 19 – August 15, 2026. Training the week of May 19; summer camp begins June 1. Ten weeks of teaching in a series of 2-week sessions.

Scope Overview

The Summer Camp team consists of adult educators, teen interns, and camp management. The team works together to prepare for and deliver 10 weeks of pre-developed curriculum in a series of 2-week sessions. For each group of up to 22 kids, there will be two adult educators and a teen intern. The camps take place at The Lawrence and utilize the museum spaces and exhibits, while having a “home base” museum classroom. Camp themes range from astronomy to engineering to zoology, always being adjusted to be appropriate for the grade they are designed for. Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate camp programming in a fun, engaging, hands-on environment while supplying accurate scientific information to the best of your ability. This may involve further reading or research on a subject or topic — it’s okay to not know the answer to every question!
  • Co-create a healthy classroom culture in an age-appropriate manner, with safety and engagement as top priorities. Setting clear and consistent expectations is critical for both campers and interns.
  • Manage materials and resources including appropriate set-up, allocation, clean-up, and storage
  • Serve as an enthusiastic role model and mentor for youth grades 1–6, as well as the teen interns supporting the classrooms
  • Understand building safety and help implement emergency procedures when deemed necessary
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Lawrence Hall of Science

Knowledge & Skills

  • Responsible, organized, and strong work ethic
  • Strong customer service and verbal communication skills
  • Experienced and excited to share science experiences with youth grades 1–6
  • Experience with creative teaching methods in informal and/or formal learning environments
  • Pursuing or possession of a Bachelor’s Degree or post-secondary education program in science, education, youth development, or related field preferred
  • Available to work May 19 – August 15, 2026
  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to an assigned schedule up to full time (40 hours/week, Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, including one 45-minute lunch break and one 15-minute break)
  • Capable of working independently and collaboratively with an educational team
  • A good sense of humor, flexibility, and ability to think quickly and adapt
