Overview

The Public Education Specialist – Teen Research Program Residential Advisor position is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students passionate about youth development and who have spent time living on a college campus. In this role, you will organize and lead fun, engaging, and meaningful evening and weekend social and learning activities for teens. This position offers valuable experience in facilitating activities and mentoring middle and high school youth, as well as opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Employment type: Limited appointment

Pay: $25 per hour

Time period: June 8 – August 3 (see Required Dates & Times below)

Location: UC Berkeley, UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, and UC Santa Cruz (see Required Dates & Times below)

Responsibilities

  • Manage a social learning and dorm overnight environment for participants’ well being and safety.
  • Thoroughly understand building safety/security and implement emergency procedures as required.
  • Develop an understanding of, and the ability to facilitate, extracurricular social and community building programming for teens in a fun, engaging, and meaningful way.
  • Lead teens around campus and downtown Berkeley in a responsible, appropriate, and fun way.
  • Be responsible for materials management, including set-up, clean-up, and storage.
  • Serve as an appropriate/enthusiastic role model and mentor for youth in grades 7-12.
  • Adhere to all of the policies and procedures of UC Berkeley and The Lawrence.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Responsible, organized, and healthy work ethic.
  • Capable of working independently and collaboratively with an educational team.
  • Enthusiastic and competent to share college experiences with teens grades 7-12.
  • Strong customer service and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated creative methods in leading social and community building activities in informal learning environments.
  • Reliable, punctual, and available to work and reside on campus for all of the required dates and times.
  • Able to traverse uneven ground and lift up to 40 pounds (carts are available).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Past or current experience as an RA, residential camp counselor, or trip leader.
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in science, education, youth development, or related field.
  • A good sense of humor, flexibility, and ability to think quickly and adapt.

Required Dates and Times

  • Virtual Orientation (must attend one): Wednesday, June 3, 4:00–5:00 p.m. OR Thursday, June 4, 3:00–4:00 p.m.
  • In-person Training (must attend all):
    • Monday, June 8, 9:00–5:00 p.m. at The Lawrence Hall of Science
    • Tuesday–Friday, June 9–12, 9:00–5:00 p.m. at UC Berkeley, Valley Life Sciences Building (VLSB)
  • In-person (must participate in all program sessions):
    • HS Session 1: UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, Saturday–Friday, June 13–19, on average 8.5 hours per day, one night off, transportation and room and board provided
    • MS Session 2: UC Berkeley, Sunday–Friday, June 21–26, average 8.5 hours per day, one night off, room and board provided
    • MS Session 3: UC Berkeley, Sunday–Friday, July 5–10, average 8.5 hours per day, one night off, room and board provided
    • HS Session 4: UC Santa Cruz, Saturday–Friday, July 11–17, on average 8.5 hours per day, one night off, transportation and room and board provided
    • HS Session 5: UC Berkeley, Sunday–Friday, July 19–24, average 8.5 hours per day, one night off, room and board provided
    • HS Session 6: UC Berkeley, Sunday–Friday, July 26–31, average 8.5 hours per day, one night off, room and board provided
  • Pack Up & Final Banquet (must attend): Monday, August 3, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at VLSB and The Lawrence Hall of Science
