Gene editing is a cutting-edge frontier of science, but how does it work? Discover the exciting field of biotechnology, and learn how scientists are using a recent technology called CRISPR to change organisms’ genes accurately and efficiently. These innovations in biotechnology seek to solve many of the world’s most pressing challenges, such as curing diseases and creating crops that are more resilient to the effects of climate change. Together, we’ll explore the science behind gene editing, use CRISPR to edit genes in bacteria, and examine the complex ethical questions this innovative technology raises. This program was developed in partnership with the Innovative Genomics Institute, founded by Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna. You will gain skills and knowledge about genetics and biotechnology while adding valuable experience to your college and career pathways. Note: Please find a list of labs covered in this program in the “Activity Highlights” section below.
By the end of the program, students will receive a UC Berkeley certificate of completion, publicly share their final projects, create or strengthen their LinkedIn profiles, and be invited to join the TRP LinkedIn group. This invite-only professional network connects participants with TRP peers and staff—from high school through college, graduate studies, postdoctoral work, and into their early careers—and can serve as a long-term support system designed to grow with them.
Parents are invited at 3 p.m. on the last day for teens to share their projects.
