The Lawrence Hall of Science is the home of UC Berkeley’s ‘ottoy Initiative. The ‘ottoy Initiative aims to foster understanding of and respect for Ohlone people and culture and to repair and improve UC Berkeley’s relationship with the Ohlone community.  

Position Summary

As the home of UC Berkeley’s ‘ottoy Initiative, The Lawrence Hall of Science offers multiple culinary experiences at The Lawrence and across the UC Berkeley campus designed to foster understanding of and respect for Ohlone people and culture. These experiences are all serviced by ‘ammatka Kitchen, which is located at The Lawrence. 

Under the direction of ‘ammatka Kitchen General Manager Angelca Sackett,  the ‘ammatka kitchen cashiers are the face of our Cafe services and as such, the Clerk/Cashier is key to the organization. A knowledgeable, energetic, and friendly clerk/cashier sets the tone and ensures that all visitors receive excellent service.

Responsibilities

Cashiering

  • Follow cash handling procedures as outlined in the University of California Business and Finance Bulletin BUS-49 and departmental and campus cash handling policy
  • Follow proper cash handling and other payment options procedures including: custody of daily money drawer, record and reconcile sales on designated forms, secure sales and credit card receipts
  • Accurately operate the electronic point-of-sale (cash register), including: count customers’ change, provide receipts, correctly process on-line card transactions, ask supervisor for change in a timely manner to meet customer demand

Customer Service

  • Have knowledge of and be able to communicate all products and experiences to on site visitors and customers
  • Provide a high level of customer service, including resolving minor customer service problems according to predetermined protocols

Other Duties

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including counters, dining areas, and equipment, and adhere to food safety and hygiene standards

Required Qualifications

  • Math Skills: Basic math skills for handling cash transactions and making change.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensuring accuracy in orders, payments, and cleanliness.
  • Teamwork & Collaboration: Work effectively with other staff members.
  • Must obtain California ServSafe Food Handlers Card within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Communication Skills: Be friendly, courteous, and able to communicate effectively with both customers and kitchen staff.
  • Customer Service Skills: Strong ability to assist customers, answer questions, and resolve issues.
  • Multitasking & Efficiency: Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and work quickly.
  • Food Safety Knowledge: Understand and follow food safety regulations and hygiene practices.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. 
  • The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $19.17-$20.17.
  • This is a non-exempt, biweekly-paid position.
