How can we help learners make careful observations while encouraging curiosity and wonder?

Making focused observations brings us into the moment and into relationship with the world around us. Making observations is also a key foundation for the methods that scientists of all disciplines use to explain and understand our world. Offering opportunities for learners to make observations in STEM-learning environments has numerous benefits, from building a connection to nature and the outdoors, to supporting deep learning, to engaging learners directly in science practices and critical thinking.

In this session, we explore different methods and model activities that can strengthen learners’ skills in making observations.

This session is adapted from the BEETLES session, Making Observations.
