The East Bay Academy for Young Scientists (EBAYS) is a program at The Lawrence that provides opportunities for youth and adults to engage in environmental quality research projects that are specifically designed to address pressing community health and development concerns. These projects, which include the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data derived from community-based studies, have proven to be highly effective in terms of increasing participants’ capacity for scientific thinking, and expanding recognition of science as a valuable tool for helping to address relevant ecological and social issues faced by their communities. One of EBAYS’ current areas of community-based research focus is lead contamination. In this regard we have developed instructional materials that guide participants in the collection of outdoor soil samples and indoor dust samples.
