Learn about the traditional Ohlone practice of gathering and preparing acorns for food from Ohlone matriarch Auntie Dottie.
yuutka is a Chochenyo word that translates to the “place of the acorn.” Beneath the shade of three black oak trees, explore Ohlone abundance and learn to gather acorns with Auntie Dottie, the wise matriarch of the East Bay Ohlone people today. Auntie Dottie teaches you how to gather while being kind to all the life the acorn sustains and treating the land with respect. Watch out—if you don’t gather right, she’ll let you know! It’s all out of love and making sure you do this the right way, as she was taught by her elders.
This exhibit was developed in partnership with Ohlone youth as part of the tappenekšekma Ohlone Science Ambassadors program.
