Position Summary

The Cashier supports the ‘ammatka Kitchen at the Lawrence Hall of Science, the home of UC Berkeley’s ‘ottoy Initiative, which offers multiple culinary experiences designed to foster understanding of and respect for Ohlone people and culture. This position provides a high level of customer service to Cafe customers and co-workers, operating a point-of-sale system and ensuring financial accountability. This position welcomes candidates who have demonstrated the capacity to create inclusive work environments, work effectively on diverse teams, and serve the diverse communities with whom the department currently works and wants to attract.

Responsibilities

Cashiering Control – 25%

  • Follow cash and money handling procedures as outlined in the University of California Business and Finance Bulletin BUS-49 and other applicable departmental and campus policies.
  • Follow proper cash-handling and other payment-option procedures, including custody of daily money bags, recording and reconciling sales on designated forms, and securing sales and credit card receipts.
  • Accurately operate the electronic point-of-sale (cash register), including counting customers’ change, providing receipts, correctly processing on-the-line card transactions, ask a supervisor for change in a timely manner to meet customer demand.
  • Refer problems to Manager or Supervisor.

Customer Service & Operations – 25%

  • Provide friendly, responsive service by greeting customers, answering questions, and addressing concerns.
  • Support a positive customer experience for diverse populations, including assisting individuals with disabilities.
  • Maintain knowledge of menu offerings, including ingredients and allergens.
  • Prepare and display menu signage according to standards.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure efficient operations and a welcoming environment.
  • Maintain cleanliness of all service and dining areas (e.g., sweeping, mopping, wiping surfaces).
  • Dispose of trash, compost, and recyclables in accordance with guidelines.
  • Ensure workspaces are stocked, clean, and ready for service.

Security and Safety – 25%

  • Responsible for security and safety at the public entrance to the operations.
  • Monitor service areas to ensure proper payment and deter unauthorized removal of items.
  • Immediately resolve or report spills, damages, defects, and other issues to maintain the safety and sanitation of the facility.

Meal Preparation – 20%

  • Set-up, prepare, replenish, restock, price, and distribute beverages, food and non-food products in designated areas to ensure availability in a timely manner to meet customer demand.
  • Ensure all operational areas are clean and organized in a timely manner to meet customer demand.
  • Assemble and basic preparation of food products and beverages to support service and menu production, in adherence to ‘ammatka Cafe service and production standards.
  • Follow basic principles of safety and sanitation in food service.

Additional Duties – 5%

  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in training and professional development.

Required Qualifications

  • Cash handling experience in a retail operation.
  • Public contact skills and experience.
  • Must have basic English (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and math skills related to the safe and efficient performance of the job.
  • Ability to follow oral/written instructions.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs.
  • High School Diploma 
  • ServSafe or Food Service Handler Certification (Preferred)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous food service experience in a retail operation.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. 
  • The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $25.45 (Step 1) – $27.16 (Step 4).
  • This is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position.
  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week) Career position eligible for UC benefits.
