Discussion-based instruction can be challenging. Leading an effective meaning-making discussion requires curiosity, skills, knowledge, and experience on the part of both the educator and the learners. This session provides valuable knowledge and strategies, along with an opportunity to actually practice applying those tools. In this session, participants are invited to: Explore strategies, tools, and frameworks for leading discussions that promote equity and independent learning. Practice leading discussions, using discussion tools and instructor moves. Reflect on their current practices and strategies for leading discussions and identify skills to grow. This session is adapted from the BEETLES session, Promoting Discussion, and builds on the virtual session, Promoting Discussion: Discussion in Action. Participation in Promoting Discussion: Discussion in Action is encouraged, though not required, to attend this session. Who is this workshop for? This workshop is for anyone who is interested in learning more about how learning happens. We welcome: Folks who facilitate learning outside of the classroom environment, Folks who manage educational programs and frontline staff, Folks who design learning experiences.
